General Information

Mrs. Madden - Second Grade

MADDEN.jpgI teach 2nd grade at Gold Camp Elementary.  I can be reached via phone before and after school, and sometimes at lunch. My extension is #19. If you get into the answering system please leave me a message. Please be aware that I check my email and phone messages during break times only, which may not be until the end of the day.  If you have an urgent need, please contact the office.You can also send me an e-mail by clicking the small envelope next to my name below:

Arrival and Dismissal
  • School starts at 7:50.  Your student should be lined up outside near the door for the first-grade/second-grade wing.  Your student should not come in through the school’s front doors unless your student is five or more minutes tardy.
  • Dismissal is at 2:50.  Your student will exit through the doors from the first-grade/second-grade wing.  You can pick up your student outside that door, or you may drive to the appropriate parking lot (lot A or lot B) in order to pick up your student.
  • If your second grade student has a younger sibling in first or kindergarten at Gold Camp, please drop off and pick up your children in the Lower Lot/Lot B (this is where you picked them up in first grade). If your second grade student is an only child at Gold Camp, or has older siblings third grade-sixth grade that attend Gold Camp, you will pick them up in the Upper Lot/Lot A (the parking lot in the front of the school). 
Report Card Grading Scale

 

90%-100%=       4  Excellent

80%-89%=         3  Good

70%-79%=         2  Progressing

69% and below= 1  Improvement Needed

 

REPORT CARD DEFINITIONS

4(E) = Excellent:  The student works independently and shows a consistent  display of  strength in this area.

3(G) =Good:  The student works independently and is making appropriate gains.

2(P) = Progressing: The student is doing what is expected and is making gains but is not fully independent in this area.

1(I) =Improvement Needed:  There is a significant discrepancy between the student’s work or actions and what is expected.

Missing Assignments

If a student misses school, they will have two days for every day absent (starting the day after their return) to make up the work.

Planners

Daily planners are expected to be filled out every day by students. Parents should check the planner and sign it each night.

October News

*It is hard to believe it is October already.  Each month I will send home a newsletter with an update on what’s happening in our class.  This information is also available on the Gold Camp Website on my classroom page.

 

*Parent/Teacher Conferences: Parent/Teacher Conferences are coming up on October 24 & 25.  Information about scheduling your conference time will be coming to you soon. 

 

*Math:  We have finished Topics 1-2 of our math program.  We have been working on strategies for addition and subtraction.  Looking for a way to help your child at home? Practice those math facts!

 

*Language Arts:  We are reading, reading, reading!  Spelling words follow a spelling rule that we are working on in class.   If your child hasn’t told you, the challenge words are a bonus.  In other words, if your child gets all of the spelling words correct, that is their test score.  The challenge words are extra.  We have also been exploring different types of sentences: statements, questions, commands, and exclamations.

 

*Science:   Butterflies!  We have been studying the life cycle of the butterfly.  We observed the life cycle beginning with our caterpillars, then the chrysalis, and finally BUTTERFLIES!.   

 

*Social Studies:  We have been working on building our classroom community.  We have also been learning some interesting things about geography.   We are also reading a variety of social studies literature. 

 

*Technology:  The children are having lots of opportunities to use the computers in our classroom. Over the past few weeks, the children have been learning to navigate the Gold Camp site, and my website, which has links to appropriate 2nd grade math and spelling games.

 

Cougar Dash:

10/3: This is the last day for Cougar Dash pledge money to be turned in. You can bring it in to school or submit it online. 

10/11: Prize Day for the Cougar Dash during Specials (12:05-12:45).
