General Information

Mrs. Madden - Second Grade

MADDEN.jpgI teach 2nd grade at Gold Camp Elementary.  I can be reached via phone before and after school, and sometimes at lunch. My extension is #19. If you get into the answering system please leave me a message. Please be aware that I check my email and phone messages during break times only, which may not be until the end of the day.  If you have an urgent need, please contact the office.You can also send me an e-mail by clicking the small envelope next to my name below:

Arrival and Dismissal

  • School starts at 7:50.  Your student should be lined up outside near the door for the first-grade/second-grade wing.  Your student should not come in through the school’s front doors unless your student is five or more minutes tardy.
  • Dismissal is at 2:50.  Your student will exit through the doors from the first-grade/second-grade wing.  You can pick up your student outside that door, or you may drive to the appropriate parking lot (lot A or lot B) in order to pick up your student.
  • If your second grade student has a younger sibling in first or kindergarten at Gold Camp, please drop off and pick up your children in the Lower Lot/Lot B (this is where you picked them up in first grade). If your second grade student is an only child at Gold Camp, or has older siblings third grade-sixth grade that attend Gold Camp, you will pick them up in the Upper Lot/Lot A (the parking lot in the front of the school). 

Report Card Grading Scale

 

90%-100%=       4  Excellent

80%-89%=         3  Good

70%-79%=         2  Progressing

69% and below= 1  Improvement Needed

 

REPORT CARD DEFINITIONS

4(E) = Excellent:  The student works independently and shows a consistent  display of  strength in this area.

3(G) =Good:  The student works independently and is making appropriate gains.

2(P) = Progressing: The student is doing what is expected and is making gains but is not fully independent in this area.

1(I) =Improvement Needed:  There is a significant discrepancy between the student’s work or actions and what is expected.

Missing Assignments

If a student misses school, they will have two days for every day absent (starting the day after their return) to make up the work.

Planners

Daily planners are expected to be filled out every day by students. Parents should check the planner and sign it each night.

February News

Field Trip: Our 2nd grade field trip to the Fine Arts Center is Tuesday, February 19. We will be leaving school at 9:30 and returning to school by 11:25.  I currently do not have any parent chaperones confirmed to go with us on this fun trip.  I really need at least one parent to chaperone a group. If you think you can help out please let me know.

 

Centers:  Please consider signing up to help with our classroom centers.  Even if you are only available one day per month, it would help out a lot! See the link below to sign up. I still have some Tuesday slots open each month.

Math:  We have been learning about regrouping for both addition and subtraction. If your child is still having difficulty with math facts please spend some additional time working on this at home. Remember math facts to 18 should be memorized by the end of the year.   

 

Language Arts:  We are continuing to work on word patterns and sentence structure.  We are reading a variety of genres, working on differentiating between fact and opinion, and drawing conclusions.

 

Social Studies:  We continue to read a social studies book and magazine each week.  Children read and discuss the text, and complete a short handout that compliments the book.  Our reading series also integrates social studies literature, which correlates with the student selections in our anthology.

 

Science:  The class will be learning about balance and motion.  We will be experimenting with balancing, spinners, rollers, back and forth motion, and magnets.

 

Valentine's Day Party:  Our class Valentine's Day party will be on Thursday, February 14 at 2:00.

 

Planner:    As you know, we write our homework in the planners each day. I also occasionally write notes in the planners to get information home. Please take a moment, each night, to review your child's planner and sign in the parent / teacher comment box. Thank you!

 

Conferences:  The February Conferences are scheduled on as needed basis only.  Friday, February 22 has been set aside for these conferences. If I feel a conference is needed, I will be in touch shortly to schedule with you.
